Pep Guardiola ‘furious’ after Everton v Man City controversy

Pep Guardiola was left fuming on the touchline after a controversial incident in the first half between Everton and Manchester City.

Everton were beaten 2-0 by City in the Premier League on Saturday (19 April) as the two clubs met for the final time at Goodison Park.

Paul Merson shared a shock prediction ahead of the match, with Moyes’ side looking to cause an upset. However, it didn’t pan out this way for the home side, as two late goals allowed City to leave with the points.

Everton were thought to be at a disadvantage after Simon Hooper was appointed for the match. However, at half-time, it was City and Guardiola who were feeling aggrieved by a refereeing decision.

There was little to separate the two sides in the first half at Goodison Park, with City controlling much of the ball but struggling to find a breakthrough, while James Tarkowski was unlucky not to give the home side the lead after his header crashed off the post.

However, Guardiola felt as though the visitors should have had a penalty in the first half.

With a quarter of an hour played on Merseyside, City winger Savinho went down at the back post as he attempted to meet a Kevin de Bruyne cross.

While contact was made, VAR Darren England decided against giving a penalty, with Mike Dean in agreement. However, Guardiola clearly felt differently.

While speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live [via BBC Sport, 3:16 pm], Chris Sutton shared the reaction of the Manchester City manager.

The 52-year-old said, “(Pep) Guardiola is furious. He’s having words with the fourth official. Is there enough contact? That’s the question. My gut reaction – there isn’t enough contact.

“Savinho should have been stronger and stayed on his feet.”

Moyes will be frustrated after Everton defeat v Man City

Losing to Manchester City is no great shame, and Moyes and his players shouldn’t be too hard on themselves. However, the 62-year-old is likely to be frustrated by the manner of the defeat.

It looked as though the Toffees were going to hold on for a point before conceding twice in the closing stages, and Moyes will want to ensure his players see out matches better in the future.
