Why Everton are nicknamed the Toffees

Everton have seen their nickname ‘the Toffees’ follow them throughout their history.

While the Merseyside club have been given multiple names throughout their 147-year history, the Toffees is certainly the one that’s stuck.

With Everton now set to move to their new Hill Dickinson Stadium, a new era is set to begin under David Moyes.

Therefore, it is important to reflect and look back on the history and traditions of the Football League founders.

The Toffees nickname dates back to their days at Anfield

One part of Everton’s history that is often forgotten is the fact that the Merseyside club previously played at Anfield.

Now home to rivals Liverpool, Everton used the stadium as their home ground between 1884-92.

Near the stadium was a shop called Ye Ancient Everton Toffee was owned by Molly Bushell. Here, Toffees were sold to many fans on their way to watch the match.

Upon Everton’s move to Goodison Park in 1892, a new candy store came into the picture in Mother Noblett’s Toffee Shop.

With the two stores competing to be the most successful, Mother Noblett, owner of the latter shop, had the idea to give Toffees out to fans attending the game, a tradition that continues to this day.

As a result, Everton’s nickname of ‘the Toffees’ quickly stuck and has become a big part of the Merseyside club’s history.
