Everton make approach to sign Victor Lindelof, ex-Man United defender decides on next move

Everton are reportedly keen on signing former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof ahead of the transfer deadline.

David Moyes has already signed a defender in Adam Aznou this summer from Bayern Munich, but he still wants to bolster his backline.

Jarrad Branthwaite’s injury has seen the Toffees enter the market for another centre-back.

James Tarkowski and Michael Keane were the centre-back pairing as Everton beat Brighton over the weekend and the duo were also handed a start by Moyes in the loss against Leeds United.

Victor Lindelof fancies Fiorentina switch

Fiorentina, along with the Toffees, are keen on signing Lindelof, who is currently a free agent.

The Sweden international is available on a free transfer as his contract with Manchester United expired at the end of June.

Fabrizio Romano reported on 26 August that Everton made an approach to sign Lindelof.

However, he fancies starting a chapter in Italy as he’s edging closer to a move to Fiorentina.

The 31-year-old has been in the Premier League since 2017 and wants to move to a new country.

Everton can do much better than Victor Lindelof

Lindelof’s decision to snub Everton and pursue opportunities elsewhere, such as with Fiorentina, should not concern the Toffees, as he represents a short-term, low-impact option at 31, plagued by injuries and inconsistent form during his Manchester United tenure.

With just 25 appearances last season in all competitions and no standout attributes to elevate Everton’s defence long-term, his availability as a free agent is appealing but ultimately underwhelming.

Instead, the Toffees can target superior centre-backs who can actually give Tarkowski a run for his money.

With the summer transfer window closing on 1 September 1, urgency is key.

Prioritising motivated, elite prospects will fortify the backline for sustained success under Moyes, avoiding the pitfalls of settling for mediocrity.

Hopefully, progress is being made behind the scenes as the Toffees seem a couple of signings shy from achieving their goals for the 2025/26 season.
