Malick Fofana decides on his future after Everton submit transfer big-money bid

Everton have been linked with Lyon winger Malick Fofana for the past few weeks.

The 20-year-old Belgian has impressed in France, which has led to a number of times showing an interest in his services.

Everton, Bayern Munich, Newcastle and Liverpool have all been keen on Fofana this summer.

Given the growing interest, many expected Fofana to leave Lyon before the transfer deadline on 1 September.

Malick Fofana set to stay at Lyon

Everton had tabled a £31.4million bid for Fofana as they aimed to strike an agreement with the French side.

However, Lyon played hardball and managed to keep him at the club despite the Toffees making their move.

L’Equipe reported on 26 July that the Ligue 1 side wanted £34.9million in fixed terms and were confident that an agreement could be struck for Fofana.

However, it turns out that the 20-year-old will not be leaving Lyon in this transfer window.

Sky Sports Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported on 26 August that he has decided to stay put in France.

Tavolieri claims that Fofana did not find a club that matched his ambitions and is prepared to wait to join the right club.

Via X, he wrote: “Malick Fofana has decided to stay at Olympique Lyonnais!

“The Belgian didn’t find the club that truly matches his ambitions this summer and prefers to wait for the upcoming transfer windows to find the best project.”

Everton dodge bullet by not signing Malick Fofana

Fofana could have been a strong addition to Everton’s squad, bringing pace and flair to their attack.

However, his apparent lack of enthusiasm for joining the Toffees or any other club this summer suggests a potential mismatch.

Forcing a move for a player uninterested in the club’s project risks disharmony and underperformance, especially if Fofana’s sights are set on a Champions League side.

Everton’s resources are better invested in players eager to embrace the club’s vision and commit long-term.

Prioritising motivated talents ensures squad cohesion and avoids the disruption of players seeking quick exits when bigger clubs come calling.
