Everton make last-gasp Merlin Rohl transfer approach, quick medical could be next
Everton could revive their interest in Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl on transfer deadline day.
David Moyes is still keen on further reinforcements before the window shuts, with the likes of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish making a huge impact at Everton already.
The Friedkin Group need to ensure that the Scotsman is backed fully after an impressive start to the campaign.
Everton are just one or two additions away from being ready to fully turn a corner under Moyes, and the ownership needs to ensure that they get them.
That is where Merlin Rohl comes into play.

Everton make Merlin Rohl approach to beat deadline
Everton have previously been linked with Rohl, and they could do with another body in the engine room before the 19:00 deadline.
According to Indykaila News on X on 31 August, the Blues have spoken to Rohl’s representatives over a switch.
He stated that if an agreement is reached between the clubs, a medical will take place on 1 September.
Who is Everton target Merlin Rohl?
Rohl is a 23-year-old midfielder who started his career with FC Ingolstadt 04 before securing a move to Freiburg in August 2022.
He has made a total of 48 appearances in the Bundesliga, notching two goals and six assists in the top division in Germany.
Strengths:
- Pace: Rohl boasts high-speed sprinting and can make quick runs
- Technical skills: He has strong ball control and dribbling, making him a one-on-one threat
- Agility and balance: Can change direction quickly and keep the ball in tight spaces
Weaknesses:
- Experience: Only played 48 times in German top-flight, never played in Premier League
- Defensive awareness: Could improve his anticipation in defensive situations
- Long shots: Not a constant threat from range with the ball at his feet
Rohl is a tall, versatile midfielder who is gifted with the ball at his feet and likes to dribble and play short passes, which could help Moyes’ side to keep hold of the ball.
He has been capped 13 times for the Germany Under-21 team, and if he moves to the Premier League with the Toffees, it may be a matter of time before he gets a senior call-up.
