David Moyes and four-time trophy winner – Everton’s best managers ever

Everton are one of British football’s most historic clubs.

Everton are eighth in the all-time major honours list, with 24 trophies won since they were formed in 1878.

The last of those was the FA Cup in 1995, when Everton defeated Manchester United 1-0 to lift the trophy at Wembley.

Here, Goodison News looks at the best managers that the Blues have ever had in their dugout.

David Moyes

David Moyes is the current Everton manager, having returned to the Toffees in January to replace Sean Dyche.

While the Scotsman has never won a trophy with the Blues, he is one of the most iconic managers in their history.

His relationship with supporters and the fact that he constantly had Everton challenging for Europe in the mid-2000s have cemented his place in the history books.

His stint at West Ham brought a major trophy with the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023, and the 62-year-old will hope to repeat the success on his return to Merseyside and break the hoodoo that the L4 outfit have endured recently.

Howard Kendall

Howard Kendall is the most successful Everton manager in terms of trophies.

The Toffees won four trophies in Kendall’s reign in charge, with two league titles, an FA Cup and a European Cup Winner’s Cup.

He left in 1987, frustrated with the fact that English clubs were banned from Europe, moving to Athletic Bilbao.

However, he returned for a second spell with the Toffees in 1990, leading them away from relegation danger before two mid-table finishes.

He would leave in December 1993 after a poor run of form and an argument with club officials over the pursuit of Dion Dublin.

Harry Catterick

Harry Catterick started managing Everton in 1961, and he led the Blues to the league championship on two occasions.

His side won the division in the 1962-63 campaign and then repeated that success, seven seasons later in the 1969-70 season.

He also added an FA Cup to his resume in the 1965-66 season, beating his former side Sheffield Wednesday in the final.

Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti’s reign at Everton was a fever dream for some Evertonians.

The legendary manager, who has won the Champions League five times in his managerial career, surprisingly took over at Goodison Park in 2019.

He recorded a 46.3 win percentage, one of the highest for a Toffees manager in the history of the club, but was unable to take his side to a trophy.

His reign lasted until 2021, when Real Madrid came calling and he rejoined the Spanish giants.

Joe Royle

Joe Royle was the manager who brought Everton’s last success in any competition, with that 1995 FA Cup victory.

Royle was a part of Catterick’s side that brought a second league title in his time in charge, and went on to record a 39.8 win percentage with the Blues as a manager.

Royle is regarded as Everton royalty and was named as an ‘Everton Giant’ in 2004 for his contributions to the club in the dugout and as a player.
