David Moyes will be furious at Premier League announcement made for Manchester City vs Everton

David Moyes and Everton have not had the best of seasons when it comes to the refereeing of their Premier League games.

When Everton lost 2-1 to Liverpool, Darren England attracted plenty of criticism for his view of several key incidents.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was booked for taking a quick free-kick against Liverpool, and the referee missed a clear foul in the build up to the home side’s opener.

The midfielder, in particular, has been on the end of some highly controversial decisions in his short time at Everton so far.

Dewsbury-Hall was suspended for Everton’s game against Crystal Palace, after he had been booked for making a perfectly clean challenge against West Ham.

Tony Harrington appointed for Manchester City vs Everton

The Premier League have announced that Tony Harrington will take charge of Everton’s trip to Manchester City on Saturday.

Nick Hopton will be the video assistant referee, with Constantine Hatzidakis serving as the assistant video assistant referee.

Everton have only been refereed by Harrington on eight occasions, with the Englishman still fairly new to the Premier League.

The Toffees have emerged victorious for four of those games, losing just two, against Nottingham Forest last season and Newcastle United in the 2022-23 season.

But it is another facet of the referee’s Everton record that will frighten Moyes.

Everton booked more than anyone under Harrington

Given Everton’s high numbers of booking already this season, Moyes will not be pleased to hear that Harrington has handed out bookings to the Toffees at a higher rate than against any other team.

In just eight matches, the referee has given 24 yellow cards to Everton players – an average of three every single game.

Everton 0-2 Nottingham Forest24-25
Newcastle United 1-1 Everton23-24

Everton 1-0 Crystal Palace23-24
Aston Villa 1-2 Everton23-24
Newcastle United 1-0 Everton22-23
Everton 2-0 Boreham Wood21-22

The only team who have come anywhere near close to receiving the same level of punishment from Harrington are QPR, who have received an average of two yellow cards for the 19 games overseen by the Englishman.

However, the referee is yet to hand out a red card in any Everton game, awarding just one penalty.

Everton are already running the risk of suspension should several players receive their fifth booking of the season, and Harrington’s record will only heighten concerns.
