David Moyes out to achieve Everton first as Man City encounter beckons

David Moyes will be looking to do something at Everton for the first time in 36 attempts.

Everton return to Premier League action to face Man City this weekend, with hopes of building on their recent triumph against Crystal Palace.

The Eagles held an impressive unbeaten run before the Toffees turned up, with Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish on the score sheet in a 2-1 win.

However, having ended their record run, Everton will also be looking to end a record they hold under Moyes when they travel to the Etihad on Saturday.

David Moyes has a dreadful record against the top teams

Everton have had a very good start to the season, though they have only faced one of last season’s top three at this stage.

That was Liverpool, with Idrissa Gueye’s 58th-minute strike at Anfield proving to be nothing other than a consolation goal in a 2-1 defeat.

However, Moyes‘ record against teams that finished in the top three in the previous season goes way back, with Everton yet to beat one of them in the 36 encounters they have had under the Scotsman.

His struggles go beyond just Merseyside, with only one win from 58 games against teams that have finished in the top three in the season prior.

That was with West Ham in 2023, when the Irons secured a 2-0 victory against Arsenal courtesy of goals from Tomas Soucek and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Everton’s record vs Man City isn’t much better

Everton have faced off against Man City on 199 occasions, dating all the way back to 1899.

The Toffees won that game 2-1, but since then have managed 68 wins compared to Man City’s 82 in all competitions.

On the face of it, that seems fairly even, until you look at recent encounters.

Everton’s most recent wins against Man City

Everton haven’t beaten Man City since 2017, and have since suffered 14 defeats.

The last meeting saw Man City beat Everton 2-0 back in April, when Nico O’Reilly and Mateo Kovacic got the goals.

Saturday’s clash will be a very tough one for the Toffees, but based on the form of the two sides so far this season, a win can’t be ruled out.
