Everton could take a step closer to unwanted record vs Manchester City

Everton have struggled against Manchester City in recent years.

Everton travel to face City at the Etihad Stadium on 18 October, as the Premier League returns from the international break.

Everton beat Crystal Palace before the action halted, and they will hope that their momentum has not been sapped away.

Everton are the underdogs for the contest, and it is no surprise given their recent record against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Everton could extend dismal record vs Man City

Everton are finally looking up after years of misery, but their record against City is a major concern ahead of the contest.

The Blues have not won against the Citizens since January 2017, which is 17 matches in all competitions since they managed a victory, as the Sofascore graphic below highlights.

Their longest run against any team without a win is the 19 games against Manchester United between September 1995 and August 2004.

That means that just two more defeats against City would equal that record, while three would see the Toffees set a new unwanted record.

David Moyes has to pick up a win against City soon

The Blues need to arrest that record against Guardiola’s side, and they need to do it soon.

It would be a huge sign of progress if they could finally break the hoodoo against City, and not become the victims of a truly dismal record.

David Moyes has done a brilliant job since returning to Merseyside, but they need to start picking up points against the elite sides in the division, if they are to truly take another step forward.

The Scotsman will not want to play a part in a historically bad achievement; he will want his side to get one over on the Manchester club in their next three matches.

Whether they can or not, especially without Jack Grealish, who is ineligible, as it is his parent club, remains to be seen.
