Everton star has surely sealed his January fate with ‘anonymous’ recent display

Everton are likely to continue the overhaul of their squad during the January transfer window.

The Toffees added nine new faces to their ranks over the summer, and several have helped to contribute towards a very encouraging start to the season.

Jack Grealish has been the highlight of Everton’s summer business, as he has added a game-changing creativity to the group since he came through the door.

David Moyes is likely to target further additions this winter, and that will surely mean several players heading in the other direction, with this star likely to be a prime candidate.

Dwight McNeil ‘anonymous’ for Everton U21s vs Bradford City

Everton’s U21s team lined up with several first-teamers for their clash with Bradford City in the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday night, but they had little effect as the League One outfit out 5-1 winners.

Young full-backs Nathan Patterson and Adam Aznou both started the game at Valley Parade, as did Dwight McNeil, who was once a £20million signing from Burnley.

However, the winger has made just one Premier League appearance for the Merseysiders so far this season, and he did little to impact the game in a positive sense at Valley Parade on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old had 61 touches throughout the encounter, but failed to create a single chance or complete a successful dribble in what was a disappointing evening for a player who once showed plenty of promise.

McNeil was handed a 4/10 player rating with the Liverpool Echo, who branded the Englishman as “anonymous” in the attacking midfield role.

He was once a player who the Toffees relied upon to provide their creative spark during top-flight games, but he could not have looked further from that on Tuesday night.

Dwight McNeil to exit the Hill Dickinson Stadium in January

The chances of McNeil breaking back into the Everton team were slim regardless, and his latest performance will not have done him in favours either in that respect.

The Toffees have had an influx of quality options to fill the positions behind the striker, with Grealish, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tyler Dibling and Carlos Alcaraz all coming through the door in the summer.

McNeil now finds himself firmly down the pecking order, and it has become clear that he will need to move away for the good of his career.

He looks a shadow of his former self at the moment, and appears to be stuck in a vicious circle of not getting any football, but also not doing enough to show that he is worthy of a place.

With that in mind, he surely has to depart during the January window, even if that exit ends up being on loan.
