Media reacts to ‘surprising’ Jordan Pickford scenes as England hammer Latvia

Jordan Pickford is one of the first names on Thomas Tuchel’s teamsheet for England.

Pickford is the undisputed number one for Everton and England, and he has cemented his position for the national team lately.

Tuchel has doubted the Everton goalkeeper, but he has stepped up and proven himself to the ex-Chelsea boss.

Pickford broke Gordon Banks’ record for consecutive clean sheets against Wales last time out, and he was in fine form in the win over Latvia on 14 October.

How the media rated Everton star Jordan Pickford in England win

Everton ace Pickford has surely sealed his spot for the World Cup, after another solid showing between the sticks for the Three Lions.

Tuchel’s side came out 5-0 winners against the minnows, and sealed their qualification for the tournament, and Pickford only had one shot on target to deal with.

The Mirror handed the Blues stopper a seven out of 10 rating, saying:  Surprisingly was made to work – and sweat – for another clean sheet. So reliable.”

The Independent gave him a six out of 10, saying: “Completely inactive for the first hour as England controlled the ball.

“His only real concern on the night was keeping warm in the rain. He was finally called into action as he produced a routine stop in the 68th minute, a couple of minutes after he nearly fluffed a clearance outside of his own box.”

The Standard also handed Pickford a six out of 10, saying: Kept a record ninth consecutive clean sheet for his country – and did have saves to make in the second half.”

Meanwhile, The Express gave him a seven out of 10, saying: “Improved his clean sheet streak to a record-extending nine in a row on a night where he was only rarely troubled. Only had one save to make.”

What Everton stars could join Pickford in the England squad?

Pickford is a definite for next summer’s competition but he could be joined by several Toffees stars for the tournament.

Tuchel drew significant criticism for not calling up Jack Grealish, after his remarkable start to life at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The 30-year-old could well work his way into the fold, if he continues his form on Merseyside, surely there will be no choice but to recall him.

David Moyes has called for James Garner to be in there, and it is difficult to disagree with the Blues boss, as he has been in brilliant form this season.

Jarrad Branthwaite and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have outside chances, but it is difficult to see them getting in, as Tuchel has shown no hint of selecting either of those Everton stars.
