David Moyes ‘desperate’ to use Everton player who fans barely know, he’ll instantly upgrade side
Everton have enjoyed a brilliant start to the season under David Moyes.
Sitting eighth in the Premier League table, Everton’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace has given fans the belief that they can qualify for Europe based on some of their performances.
Despite this, Everton have had to deal with absences of key players throughout the season, as injuries continue to play a big part in the their season.
One star that Everton fans have hardly seen play could be a huge asset to Moyes once he returns.

Merlin Rohl has a huge part to play in Everton’s season
Merlin Rohl joined Everton from Freiburg on a season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy for a fee worth £17.3m.
Rohl is currently out with a hip injury, although his return to the squad could come within the next couple of matches.
His only Premier League appearance came against Aston Villa at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, where he played 24 minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Merlin Rohl’s injury record:
- 2022/23 – Three games missed
- 2023/24 – Five games missed
- 2024/25 – 19 games missed
An article by the Daily Mail has said that Moyes cannot wait for Rohl to be fit again, and is keen to add his his physicality and power to the starting lineup.
The 23-year-old played a huge role for the Germany U21 in their run to the European Championship final this summer as his country lost out to England.
Whilst Rohl is clearly a talented midfielder, his concerning injury record meant that Everton were also looking for additional reinforcements.
John McGinn was linked with Everton, yet he’s decided to remain in Birmingham, meaning that Rohl’s introduction back into the team cannot come soon enough.

What’s clear is that alongside James Garner, Everton’s midfield would become much more versatile, and that could spell trouble for Idrissa Gana Gueye.
Merlin Rohl would instantly replace Idrissa Gana Gueye in the starting lineup
Rohl is an imposing presence in the centre of midfield and would complement Garner’s quality on the ball brilliantly.
As a result, Gueye would drop out of the starting lineup, something that might be perhaps unpopular amongst Everton fans.
Gueye has been brilliant for both club and country in 2025-26, yet Rohl’s profile would seem much more suited to the way Moyes wants his side to play.
Whilst Rohl is unavailable for the trip to Man City on Saturday, his integration into the first XI could have significant ramifications on Gueye’s role in the side.
