Harry Maguire sends three-word message to Jordan Pickford after new Everton deal

Jordan Pickford is aiming to make Everton history after securing his future at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton announced that Pickford had signed a new contract on Thursday, with the new deal set to see the goalkeeper pass a decade as a Toffee.

There had never been any doubt over the England international’s future, but several controversial comments had been in in recent days.

Lee Dixon remarked his surprise that Pickford had not joined a “bigger club”, and Danny Murphy shared similar sentiments this week.

Pickford shut Murphy and Dixon up with his statement after signing, however, expressing the huge pride he feels playing for Everton.

Pickford arrived on Merseyside as a 23-year-old goalkeeper in 2017, fresh off a breakout Premier League season with Sunderland, and holding a massive £30million price tag.

The weight of such a fee may have been enough to break some players, but it only spurred Pickford on.

The years since have seen the goalkeeper mark his name among the Premier League’s best, and earn a huge 80 caps for England.

The Everton man is now set to play in his sixth major international competition for the Three Lions next summer, and will hope that elusive trophy can finally be brought home with him.

Pickford took to Instagram on Thursday to share a picture of himself with his new contract surrounded by his wife and children.

England teammate and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire commented on the picture, and wrote: “Well deserved mate”. The message was accompanied by a clapping hands emoji, and a fire emoji.

Pickford and David Moyes come full circle

Who was the manager who made a young Premier League-unproven Pickford his unquestioned number one for Sunderland in 2016? Well, none other than David Moyes, of course.

The Scot had taken over in the summer, and after just two matches, selected Pickford in his team and never took him out, save for a period of injury.

With interested clubs circling at the end of the season, Moyes said: “If Jordan was to go elsewhere and not be the No 1, that wouldn’t be good for him because that would affect his progress.

You can see what he does for us with the saves he makes. He’s been outstanding from day one.”

It can only be assumed that Moyes advised Pickford to join Everton in 2017, and it is some football poetry that the two have now been reunited. Pickford the England international, Moyes the Premier League veteran.
