
Why Athletic Club paid touching tribute to Everton legend Howard Kendall on Friday
Howard Kendall’s name will live on in Everton’s history forever.
Kendall is one of Everton’s greatest ever players, after spending eight years in Merseyside.
He won the 1969-70 First Division title with the Toffees, and was. made up the fantastic midfield that contained Alan Ball and Colin Harvey.
Kendall sadly passed away on 17 October 2015, and Spanish side Athletic Bilbao have made a tribute on the 10-year anniversary.

After joining the Toffees from Preston in 1967, Kendall made 274 appearances for Everton in all competitions, scoring 21 goals in that time.
He would later go on to play for Birmingham, Stoke, and Blackburn, before eventually finishing his playing career at Goodison Park.
After his brilliant time as a footballer came to an end, Kendall became a legendary manager at Everton.

- Two league titles
- One FA Cup
- One European Cup Winner’s Cup
With English clubs banned from European competitions from 1985 to 1990, Kendall left Everton after six years to take charge of Spanish side Athletic Club.
After spending two years in Spain, Kendall would return to England to manage of Man City, Notts County, and Sheffield United, while also having two more spells as the Everton manager.
Kendall was fondly remembered for his time in Spain, and the Bilbao club’s touching seven-minute tribute respectfully honours the impact he had on football.
One thing that’s for certain is that Kendall led Everton to their most successful period in recent history.

Whilst Kendall is not high up on Everton’s all-time appearance list, the legacy he has left behind both on and off the pitch will live on for generations.
To this day, Kendall remains the last English manager to win a UEFA club competition with an English club.
He is also part of the English Football Hall of Fame, and after managing 542 matches for Everton, his success in both domestic and European competitions is unparalleled to anything the Toffees have seen before.
Everton are a massive club in football, and Kendall’s name will forever be associated with a glorious period of their history.
