Paul Merson shares new Jack Grealish verdict amid fresh England developments
Jack Grealish is doing everything that he can to win a place in England’s World Cup squad next summer.
Grealish joined Everton on a season-long loan from Manchester City in order to play regularly and force his way back into the national team.
Grealish has not been called up since a 3-1 win over Finland in October 2024, when he notched the Three Lions’ opener.
Thomas Tuchel has so far resisted the temptation to pick the Blues loanee, despite his impressive showings for David Moyes‘ side.

Paul Merson shares why Jack Grealish should in the England squad
Everton star Grealish is expected to miss out on the World Cup, as Tuchel prefers other options, and it would be a surprise if he was handed a chance.
However, Paul Merson believes that the Toffees ace should be included, as he brings something which no one else does.
Speaking on Sky Sports on 18 October (12:10 pm), he said: “Jack Grealish for me, if he keeps on playing, I take Jack Grealish, because he keeps the ball.
“People go we don’t get the ball and beat six players anymore and score a goal, what he does, he keeps the ball, and when we go to the World Cup, we will have to keep the ball, it is going to be boiling hot over there.
“For me, he ticks that box, and for me, he is the one that is going to be a big decision.”

Grealish has been in brilliant form, as the Sofascore graphic above highlights.
Everton can benefit from Grealish snub
The longer that Grealish does not make the squad, the better for the Blues.
If he is not included, then he will be rested and not get injured in the international break and he will be more determined to get in and prove the ex-Chelsea boss wrong.
- Grealish has played nine times for the Blues so far
- He has one goal and four assists in that time
- He has not been selected in the last eight England squads, so has not added to his 39 caps for the Three Lions
That should mean that he will play even better than he already has, in a desperate attempt to force his way into Tuchel’s plans.
That should ultimately benefit Moyes’ side, as Grealish will need to be in his absolute top form to have any chance of upsetting the apple cart.
Right now, it does not look likely, but Merson is right; he should be on the plane to the United States, if he maintains his current form, as he gives the national team a completely different option than what they already have.
