David Moyes has clear Everton contract priority after latest announcements, it’s not James Garner

Everton have secured the long-term futures of several of their key stars in the last few weeks.

James Tarkowski signed a new two-year deal back on 8 October, and the centre-back hasn’t been the only important member of the squad to extend his stay on Merseyside of late.

Jordan Pickford penned fresh terms at Everton earlier this week, with the Toffees moving to solidify the spine of their team for the coming years.

David Moyes will have been delighted to see two of his most reliable stars reach those agreements, and the new contracts may be unlikely to stop there if the boss gets his way.

Everton have to prioritise Idrissa Gueye contract extension

The recent interest in James Garner will have provided concern at Everton recently, especially considering that he is out of contract at the end of the season.

Moyes appears to be lining up a string of new contracts within the squad, and the Toffees will have to move quickly to get the Englishman tied down, considering that Manchester United are sniffing around their former academy star.

The boss will have to sit down with Garner sooner rather than later, but there is actually another deal which could easily be struck before then.

Idrissa Gueye is another Everton star who could walk away for free at the end of the season, although the Merseysiders do have the option to extend his current deal by a further year, which would keep him around beyond his 37th birthday.

Given the nature of that clause, that is an agreement that could likely be triggered within minutes at any time, which surely makes it a no-brainer for Everton during their current spree of contract announcements.

Idrissa Gueye is still one of the first names on the team sheet

Gueye has been at Everton for over seven seasons now across his two spells, but he is still as important as ever to their success.

The Senegal international is a tireless presence in the middle of the park, and his value to Moyes and his men is highlighted by the fact that even now at his age, he has started all eight of their league games so far this term.

He is undoubtedly one of the first names on the team sheet at the Hill Dickinson Stadium at the moment, and with that in mind, it is surely a simple decision for Everton to make triggering that extension their number one priority right now.

At some point, Gueye’s fitness will begin to dip as he nears the end of his career, but for now, that moment still looks to be a long way away.
