David Moyes to face Everton sack if tactical change isn’t made after Newcastle defeat

Everton fell to a 4-1 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday, and questions need to be seriously asked of David Moyes’ tactics.

The Toffees were woeful at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with the game essentially over at half-time.

Many of Everton’s players were awful, with few actually performing to the standard expected.

It was a massive downgrade from Monday’s record-breaking 1-0 victory over Manchester United, which surpassed many fans’ expectations.

However, the defeat to the Magpies may be down to one tactical error by Moyes concerning Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

David Moyes played Kieran Dewsbury-Hall too high vs Newcastle

Against Man United, Dewsbury-Hall was fantastic.

The midfielder dominated the pitch and scored the winner that gave the visitors a famous victory.

Much of his dominance was due to Moyes’ decision to play the Englishman in a deeper role after Idrissa Gueye’s red card, a change that worked wonders.

Yet, against Newcastle, Moyes decided to play Dewsbury-Hall as an attacking midfielder, which allowed the Magpies to dominate the midfield and keep the Englishman isolated.

Despite getting a consolation goal, according to Fotmob on 30 November, the 27-year-old only managed 54 touches, the least of any outfielder to play 90 minutes.

Therefore, this tactical blunder was a major factor in Everton’s defeat, and Moyes has no one to blame but himself.

Questions simply have to be asked of the manager, as many times this season, he has made a tactical decision that has ultimately cost Everton.

If Dewsbury-Hall isn’t played deeper going forward, the Scotsman could soon find himself facing the sack.

David Moyes: Everton have had a difficult run of fixtures

In fairness to Moyes, Everton have had a terrible run of games in recent weeks.

Before the international break, they faced ties against Manchester City, Tottenham and an away day to an in-form Sunderland side before they beat Fulham.

With Bournemouth up next on Tuesday night, Moyes has expressed his desire to quickly get back to winning ways.

He told BBC Sport on 29 November: “This has been a difficult run of fixtures for us, we were away at Man United, Newcastle at home, Bournemouth away, so the job was to made sure we picked up points.

“We have done that in one of the games but not tonight. The plan is to do that on Tuesday night.”
