John Stones contract latest at Manchester City as door opens for Everton return

John Stones could be on his way back to Everton in the summer.

The Englishman departed Merseyside in 2016 and has gone on to have a hugely successful spell at the Etihad under Pep Guardiola.

Stones has won six Premier Leagues, one Champions League, four Carabao Cups, two FA Cups and a series of other accolades.

It seems as if his time with the Citizens is coming to an end with just 12 Premier League games remaining this campaign.

A move to Hill Dickinson Stadium could be on the cards in the coming months as the centre-back’s contract ticks down towards its expiry date.

Everton urged to sign John Stones

David Moyes has shown intent to bring experienced heads to L4 since coming back, and so far, it has worked.

The likes of James Tarkowski, Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Pickford provided that already and have been joined by further additions.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish have certainly made a positive impact, and Stones could be the latest to follow suit.

In January, former Everton scout Bryan King believed the Toffees could land the Englishman on a cheap deal as a Man City exit looked likely.

He said: “I think Stones would be allowed to leave Manchester City for a very minimal fee because he’s given them great service.

I could see him joining someone like Everton this week for a small fee. Stones needs games, and he’s not going to get them at Man City, so that could be beneficial for Everton.

A deal didn’t go through in the winter, but with his contract ticking down, a free transfer could be on the cards.

John Stones contract set to expire at Manchester City

The Englishman penned a five-year deal in August 2021 and is set to see that out when his contract comes to an end in June 2026.

The 31-year-old is on a reported weekly wage of £250,000 per week, equating to a yearly salary of around £13million.

It is unclear how much the Blues could pay Stones if he were to sign, but a similar wage to his Man City salary would see him become Everton’s highest-paid player.

Everton reported weekly salaries:

With Grealish’s loan coming to an end in the summer, the defender could sit £100,000 per week ahead of Jordan Pickford in the wage book.

The transfer decision will ultimately now come down to Moyes and whether he wants to add the six-time Premier League winner to his squad.
