Merlin Rohl is the unlikely key to Everton securing victory vs Manchester United – Here’s why

Merlin Rohl could finally get his opportunity to shine at Everton.

The summer signing from Freiburg has never truly hit the heights expected of him at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

His performances have been largely anonymous, resulting in minutes being increasingly hard to come by in recent weeks.

David Moyes has opted to utilise other options on Merseyside, but could get the best out of Rohl against Manchester United.

The Red Devils are the next side to travel to L4, with their most recent draw against West Ham potentially acting as the perfect blueprint.

David Moyes could use Tomas Soucek as inspiration vs Manchester United

There is no doubt that the Toffees boss would love to get one over on his former side as he comes up against Michael Carrick in the dugout.

The Red Devils have been in great form recently and will certainly represent a tough test for Moyes and Co.

Despite not getting their fifth win in a row against West Ham, they still looked dangerous at times, but the Irons still caused problems.

It was Tomas Soucek who opened the scoring at the London Stadium, capping off an all-action performance in the middle of the park.

The Czechia international completed 23 passes and maintained a 100 per cent conversion rate throughout his 90-minute cameo.

He also chipped in with 10 defensive actions, which so nearly proved to be enough to seal three points.

Moyes will be looking for his own version of Soucek against Man United on Merseyside, and Rohl could prove to be that man.

Merlin Rohl could get Everton opportunity vs Man United

Everton signed the German in the summer on an initial loan deal with an obligation to purchase him in the summer.

Rohl will cost £17.3million at the end of the season, but has failed to truly make a name for himself on Merseyside this campaign.

His 0.16 expected goals, 0.04 expected assists and 30 per cent dribble success rate per 90 in the Premier League this season is really poor and need to improve.

The midfielder has registered 1.27 chances created and 1.78 goals per game in blue, but that needs to turn into goal output in L4.

He has the perfect example with Soucek to learn from against Manchester United, and if he can, he could throw himself into the forefront of Moyes’ thinking moving forward.
