Tyler Onyango suffers season-ending injury at Stockport: What’s next for Everton’s academy star?

Tyler Onyango has suffered an injury on loan at Stockport that will see him ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Onyango has been with Everton since 2018, but a lack of first-team involvement has seen him spend several seasons out on loan.

His most recent spell saw him join Stockport for the second campaign running, but after just 13 appearances, he suffered a hamstring injury in their 1-0 defeat against Bradford midweek.

Dave Challinor has since confirmed that the 22-year-old will miss the rest of the campaign as a result of it.

However, what comes next for the defender, and does he still have a future at Everton?

Where does Tyler Onyango go from here?

First and foremost, Stockport have confirmed that Onyango will undergo surgery for the hamstring injury suffered earlier in the week, which will rule him out for a healthy amount of time.

It’s common for players to miss between three and six months when undergoing surgery in that regard, which could, at a push, see him fit for the new campaign.

But as for where he could be playing come then, it seems almost nailed on that it will be away from Merseyside.

Not only because he is out of contract this summer, according to Capology, but it seems incredibly difficult to see the Toffees handing a new deal to someone who turns 23 next month when they have made just five senior appearances since 2021.

However, as demonstrated by his Sofascore graphic below, Onyango has shown some promise for Stockport this season, having started all 10 of the League One encounters he has featured in.

Taking that into account, there will almost certainly be a handful of lower league sides willing to take him on for the new campaign, but only if he can prove his fitness.

Onyango’s injury history shows why Everton career never worked

Despite being 23 next month, Onyango has played just 55 times in a senior environment over the last six years, and injuries are a big part of it.

This is set to be his fourth long-term injury in his career, having already missed a total of 46 games since 2021.

His first injury was to his ankle, which ruled him out for 185 days.

His second injury ruled him out for 146 days, while his most recent concern prior to the ongoing one saw him miss 100 days of action.

And the worrying factor of the latter is that it was also a hamstring injury.

That stop-start career prevented him from ever having a chance to make it at Everton, and will almost certainly impact his career going forward.
