Alan Shearer reveals his reaction to ‘unbelievable’ Jordan Pickford moment in Everton vs Newcastle
Alan Shearer was left shocked by Jordan Pickford’s incredible last-minute save which secured all three points for Everton away at Newcastle United.
The Toffees beat Newcastle 3-2 at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon, and Pickford showed lightning-quick reactions to keep out Sandro Tonali’s volley in the dying moments.
Everton had taken a 2-1 lead into half-time, Jarrad Branthwaite and Beto on the scoresheet, either side of Jacob Ramsey’s equaliser.
Jacob Murphy momentarily levelled the game before Thierno Barry bundled home the eventual winner, but the moment of the afternoon came in the 94th minute as Pickford tipped Tonali’s strike onto the bar.
Jordan Pickford makes ‘world-class’ save
It was an end-to-end encounter at St James’ Park, and on two separate occasions, Everton were able to retake the lead within seconds of being pegged back by Newcastle.
The Magpies piled on the pressure in the closing stages of the game, as they looked for a third equaliser of the afternoon, but they were denied by Pickford.
Tonali’s vicious volley looked certain to find the back of the net, but the England international was on hand to make the save.
Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, former Newcastle striker Shearer insisted that it was a world-class stop from Pickford.
He said: “That is a world-class save. Just an unbelievable save. The reaction to get that onto the bar was remarkable.”
Shearer also highlighted the shock on the face of James Tarkowski after Pickford made the save, and added that he was also in disbelief.
He said: “You can see his reaction there, Tarkowski, look at that. We were like that as well, or I was anyway.”
Where does Jordan Pickford rank among Premier League goalkeepers?
Pickford has been the Everton number one since the start of the 2017-18 season, and he is still proving his quality every single week.
The Toffees can trust that the 31-year-old will come up with a moment of magic when they need him to, as he showed against Newcastle.
Despite conceding twice at St James’ Park, Pickford has still managed nine clean sheets this season, the latest of which came back in January, in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

Only four keepers have recorded more shutouts in the Premier League this term, with Arsenal’s David Raya currently leading the way on 13.
