Jarrad Branthwaite’s return has been vital for Everton – he ranks second in key Premier League metric
Jarrad Branthwaite’s return to action could be crucial for Everton’s hopes of qualifying for European football.
Branthwaite came back from a hamstring injury in the 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Hill Dickinson Stadium on 26 January, and his impact has already been clear.
He scored the opening goal in Everton‘s 3-2 win against Newcastle at St James’ Park on 28 February, but his defensive contributions were the X-factor for the Toffees in that contest.
The graphic below shows how he performed in that match, and one particular aspect of his game should serve David Moyes‘ side well going forward.

What Premier League metric does Branthwaite nearly top?
Branthwaite ranks second among central defenders in the Premier League for aerial duels won per 90 minutes, amongst players to have played more than five matches, per Sofascore.
Only Tottenham’s Kevin Danso (5.32) completes more than the Blues star’s 4.96, with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk (4.86) and Chelsea’s Tosin Adarabioyo (4.7) just behind him.

The former Carlisle man’s dominance in the air is a vital asset for Moyes’ side, and if he can continue it until the end of the season, it could help the Merseysiders a lot.
How is Branthwaite performing for Everton this season?
If Branthwaite maintains the level he is at, until the end of the campaign, he will surely have a huge impact on where the L4 outfit finish.
As well as his impressive aerial battles numbers that are highlighted above, he is also making 1.2 interceptions per game, 1.2 tackles per game and four clearances per game.
In terms of recoveries, he has made an average of 3.2 per match, and has only been dribbled past 0.3 times since he returned to the side.
If he can stay fit, he will keep his place in the side over Michael Keane, and have a huge say in Moyes’ side’s hopes of playing continental football next season.
With the potential England star back to his best, there is every chance that the Blues can push up the table, and make an impact on the European qualification places.
If he is injured at any point, it could ruin any plans that the Toffees have to upset the applecart and secure an unlikely berth.
