Paul Merson given quick response as Jordan Pickford sale question raised at Everton

Paul Merson questioned why no other team has attempted to buy Jordan Pickford shortly before Everton beat Burnley 2-0.

The Toffees were able to get over their Hill Dickinson woes as James Tarkowski and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored on Tuesday night.

Pickford would have been delighted to keep a clean sheet, especially after his heroics against Newcastle over the weekend.

The Englishman is one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League, and confusion over why he has not moved to a side competing for top honours was on Merson’s mind.

It did not take long for Merson to get a response, as Kris Boyd, his fellow pundit on Sky Sports, provided a theory.

What has Paul Merson said about a Jordan Pickford transfer out of Everton?

Everton will be delighted that Pickford has remained on Merseyside since 2017. The goalkeeper position can be one of the hardest to fill, and the Blues have had a fantastic servant in net.

Interest in the 31-year-old has come and gone throughout transfer windows of the past, but Pickford has instead stayed at the L3 outfit.

Former Arsenal player Merson is still not sure why that is the case.

Merson said on Sky Sports News: “He’s a top goalkeeper who never lets his team down. And this is no disrespect to Everton, but none of the big, big boys have come in for him. Why’s that?”

Boyd, who was also covering the midweek games, quickly chipped in too, suggesting that Everton’s likely demand for a high fee has potentially put teams off from coming in for him.

Boyd replied saying: “He’s in a strong position in terms of what Everton would demand from him in terms of a fee.

“This isn’t a criticism of Pickford, but there may have been better value out there than Pickford. As an England international, your value is through the roof.”

Overall, Everton certainly are within their right to demand a high fee.

Pickford has remained one of the most consistent shot-stoppers in England over the years and recently signed a new deal until 2029.

What is Jordan Pickford’s highest clean sheet season?

Pickford’s best season for Everton came in the 2018-19 season, but since then he has remained extremely consistent at keeping clean sheets.

There have been a few years where his numbers dropped, but he does typically finish in double-digit figures.

It would take something special for the Englishman to break his record of 14, as he currently is on 10 with nine games to go.

However, we all know how good the 31-year-old is, and it would not be a surprise to see him match or break that feat.

He is certainly capable of doing so.
