Journalist: Everton teen edging closer to regular first team involvement

Teenage Everton starlet Anthony Gordon is thought to be on the verge of a significant first team breakthrough.

Journalist Adam Jones wrote on the Liverpool Echo website on Thursday that the 18-year-old is getting closer and closer to his Premier League debut.

Gordon was the beneficiary of a bizarre situation on Wednesday, as he was added to the match-day squad for the Toffees’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at the last minute.

That was due to playmaker Bernard going down injured in the warm-up after an accidental collision with team-mate Yerry Mina.

However, the fact that Gordon was the player chosen to step into the breach is a positive sign for him, even if he didn’t get onto the pitch.

The youngster’s only taste of first team football thus far came in an exciting cameo off the bench against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup last month.

The versatile winger’s excellent form for the Toffees’ Under-23s team this season, with seven goals and three assists in 11 games, suggests that he could make the step-up to senior level.

In other Everton news, Everton are reported to be battling a Premier League rival for a £21m-rated five-time title winner.
