Journalist: Everton make contact over former Liverpool midfielder
Everton and Liverpool are the fiercest of rivals, we all know that. Therefore it’s always a surprise when a player represents them both.
It’s not unheard of, but it happens very rarely. However, new Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti apparently doesn’t see wearing Liverpool red as an impediment to becoming a Blues player.
That’s if you believe what you read, of course. In this case, his search for a central midfielder has taken him to a former Anfield favourite.
Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri claimed on his personal Twitter account on Saturday that the Toffees have made contact with Juventus over midfielder Emre Can.
The 26-year-old swapped Merseyside for Turin in 2018, but has largely been lost in the central midfield shuffle at the Italian champions.
The German international has been competing with Miralem Pjanic, Aaron Ramsey, Rodrigo Bentancur, Adrien Rabiot, Blaise Matuidi and Sami Khedira for game time this season.
Would Can be a good signing for Everton?
In terms of ability, sure. Can was always a good player, and Jurgen Klopp apparently fought very hard to keep him at Anfield.
However, he’s only started two Serie A games so far this season, and he is obviously a former Liverpool player.
Would the Toffees fans accept him? That’s the big question. But if you wash away his past as a Red, Can would be a terrific signing for Ancelotti.
In other Everton news, Under-23s boss David Unsworth has tipped a young Toffees starlet for the very top.
