Phillips raves over Everton man who is ‘pivotal’ to their success

Much of the talk around Everton and the team’s revival over the past month has been centred around managed Carlo Ancelotti.

The Italian has certainly been pivotal in the team’s ability to bounce back from tough times and produce an encouraging run of form.

However, the turnaround originally started in December under interim boss Duncan Ferguson, who is now firmly embedded in Ancelotti’s set-up.

Former England international Kevin Phillips feels that the Goodison Park stalwart is the unsung hero of the Toffees’ resurgence.

“He’s pivotal to the success and I think every club needs someone in their ranks
that has been there at the club for a long time, has got an affiliation, love for the club because you need them sort of people,” he told Football Insider.

“Duncan Ferguson did unbelievable when he did when he took over for a short period, his passion for the club, you saw on the touchline, was just incredible so you need people like them.

“Even in and around the club I can imagine Duncan Ferguson going down to the academy and just talking to young players, he is an inspiration at that football club.”

How much credit should go to Ferguson for Everton’s revival?

A huge amount, certainly. He’s been a staple on the blue half of Merseyside for many decades, but his influence is arguably as pronounced now as it’s ever been.

He is a key part of Ancelotti’s coaching staff, and it’s no surprise that the Italian ensured he was kept around after his appointment.

The former Napoli boss knows talent when he sees it, and he has leaned on Ferguson in the early stages of his Goodison reign. The Scot should be viewed as just important as Ancelotti to the team’s recent improvement.

In other Everton news, the club are set to offer a first team regular a well-deserved new contract.
