Gary Lineker issues two-word Twitter verdict on Everton defeat v Chelsea
Gary Lineker has blasted Everton for their “below par” performance against Chelsea on Sunday.
The Toffees slumped to a 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, leaving them in 12th position in the Premier League table and winless in their last three matches.
And Match of the Day host Lineker made it clear just how one-sided the contest was.
Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “Chelsea are smashing an admittedly below par Everton with some delightful football.”
How bad were Everton on Sunday?
This was a miserable afternoon, there’s no two ways about it.
The Toffees were second best in pretty much every department in the capital, and this result really showed just how much work Carlo Ancelotti has to do on Merseyside.
His team managed just three shots to Chelsea’s 17, and couldn’t even muster 40%, as per Sky Sports.
There were other concerning signs too, including the 10% discrepancy in pass accuracy between the two sides.
You simply cannot afford those kind of fundamental failures if you have genuine ambitions of kicking on and becoming a top tier side.
Obviously, these are still early days under Ancelotti, and for the most part there have been signs of improvement.
But realistically, the Italian will be a little bit shellshocked by just how poor his men were today.
What follows next is a very difficult test against a Liverpool side who are champions in all but name.
If the Toffees are to disrupt their title party, they will have to be lot better than they were today.
