Gary Lineker backs Everton sensation for int’l recognition under Carlo Ancelotti
Gary Lineker has backed Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin to play for England under Carlo Ancelotti.
The former Three Lions international believes under the management of the Italian, it won’t be long until Gareth Southgate is sniffing around.
Calvert-Lewin has been in unstoppable form at Goodison Park since Ancelotti arrived, and it is no surprise to see him receive this recognition.
Lineker commented on his slow rise to the top, and did suggest that there was one thing that could halt his progress.
“I like the way he’s improving, he’s combative, he holds it up well and can get in the box,” he told the Mirror.
“He wasn’t scoring as prolifically as you’d like at the start, but he was a young player and with young players, they either stay there and aren’t going to be quite good enough or they move on.
“Having someone like Carlo Ancelotti with his experience behind him, hopefully, he will blossom and become a possible England striker if he keeps working at his game and keeps improving.”
Ancelotti has had a similar effect on the entire Everton squad, but it has certainly been Calvert-Lewin who has benefitted from his arrival.
His 13 goals have made this his best season yet for the Toffees, doubling his previous best of only six goals. On top of this, his attacking threat has stood out.
Only Richarlison has averaged more shots on goal per game than Calvert-Lewin according to WhoScored, and it is only a matter of time before he reaches a similar level to the impressive Brazilian.
