‘Best of luck’ – Everton wave goodbye to another player after 3-1 defeat v Bournemouth
It was a sad day for all Everton fans on Sunday afternoon, with the Toffees legend Leighton Baines confirming his retirement from football.
Everton ended the Premier League season with a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Bournemouth at Goodison Park.
Carlo Ancelotti was disappointed with the result and admitted that many changes need to be made over the summer in Merseyside.
Not only was Baines leaving one of the first moves, but Everton have also waved goodbye to Marten Stekelenburg.
The Toffees confirmed on their official Twitter account on Monday that the Dutch stopper has sealed a move back to his boyhood club Ajax.
Everton shared the news alongside a commemorative video of arguably Stekelenburg’s best performance for the club.
The Dutch stopper made two penalty saves in one game at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City, from Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero – not many can say they have ever done that.
The video was filled with comments from fans claiming they wished Stekelenburg had started over Jordan Pickford against Bournemouth.
Pickford made yet another mistake and was even labelled embarrassing by Jamie Carragher with Ancelotti needing more competition in that spot.
Everton could be in the market for another keeper now that Stekelenburg has left, and ESPN have reported that the Toffees are interested in Manchester United stopper Sergio Romero.
The South American is struggling for game time at Old Trafford and he could offer great competition at Goodison Park.
