Calvert-Lewin credits Duncan Ferguson amid impressive goalscoring form
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has credited his electric start to the season for Everton to the advice he received from Duncan Ferguson.
Calvert-Lewin has kicked off this season in exceptional form, scoring nine goals across six competitive outings for the Toffees and he has received his first England call up as a result.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Everton forward said that Ferguson told him to back himself more and that he gave Calvert-Lewin the confidence to thrive in the Premier League.
He said: “Firstly, I think people have Duncan down as being this big, angry man. He’s actually a very nice guy when you’re up close with him. But in terms of that on the pitch, he just told me to back myself more, believe in my stature and backed my strength.
“I think its a confidence thing. When you do it once, you start to do it more consistently and then it becomes a part of your game. I think that’s what’s happened.
“The Premier League is the top league in the world. It’s definitely toughened me up and mentally made me into the person I am now.”
Calvert-Lewin is the joint top scorer in the Premier League this season. Him and Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min have both scored six goals in four games, with the Everton striker firing his side to the top of the table.
Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti is certainly getting the best out of his star man this term, as he did in the immediate aftermath of his appointment last season. Calvert-Lewin scored eight in 11 following the Italian’s appointment and probably would have had a few more if the season wasn’t halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Everton fans will be hoping Calvert-Lewin can keep up his red hot form when the Toffees welcome Liverpool to Goodison Park after the international break. Everton currently have a three-point lead over their city rivals at the top of the table and will be hoping to compile the misery on the Reds, following their embarrassing 7-2 loss to Aston Villa last weekend.
