PSG boss details why he prefers Everton loanee Kean in striker role over Mbappe
PSG boss Thomas Tuchel has explained why he prefers playing Everton loanee Moise Kean in the striker role ahead of Kylian Mbappe.
Kean grabbed his second brace in as many games when PSG beat Turkish side Basakehir 2-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Both Kean and Mbappe started the game but it was the Everton loanee who played primarily upfront, with World Cup winner Mbappe drifting out wide.
After the game, Tuchel spoke to RMC Sport and said that he preferred to start Kean up front as the Everton man is good at creating space for Mbappe and Neymar.
He said, “We know that Kylian likes to drop a little, left side, to be close to Neymar, himself in the half-spaces. Sometimes, we lack a guy who stays in the centre, like Moise, to finish and maybe also to (occupy) a defender and open a space for Kylian or Neymar. That’s why we decided to play with two attackers.
It speaks volumes about how highly Kean is rated by Tuchel that he potentially sees him as an important part of a side that includes World Cup and Champions League winners.
This begs the question, why isn’t he still at Everton? Kean has four goals in his last two games now and while he probably wouldn’t start over Dominic Calvert-Lewin, would it not make sense to have him on the bench?
If Kean was on the bench against Southampton he could’ve added a better attacking option than Bernard or Anthony Gordon. The suspension of Richarlison also highlighted that Everton are light on out and out strikers at the moment.
Cenk Tosun is injured but it is unlikely that he would be brought back into the fold after his disappointing loan spell at Crystal Palace last season. Has Carlo Ancelotti made a mistake in not keeping Kean around?
In other Everton news, Joleon Lescott has claimed that David Moyes turned down the chance to sign a young Gareth Bale at Everton.
