View: First team chances for Everton attacker take a blow after turgid int’l show
Everton forward Cenk Tosun turned in a shocking performance as his Turkey side were beaten 2-0 by Hungary in Wednesday’s Nations League game.
Despite captaining his country, Tosun was unable to lead his side to victory as he struggled to make any impact against Hungary.
The 29-year-old was recently given an Everton lifeline by Carlo Ancelotti after making an appearance against Newcastle in the Premier League.
But Wednesday’s showing will have done Tosun no favours in his hunt for regular first-team football.
According to Wyscout, Tosun didn’t get register any shots on target against Hungary and registered an expected goals (xG) rate of 0.28 xG, this means he was never likely to score.
Only 28% of Tosun’s attempted actions were successful against Hungary which is quite simply unaccpetable for a striker who wants to be starting Premier League games.
Tosun only managed to take two tocuhes inside the Hungary box didn’t have much impact on any area of the pitch as the heatmpa below shows.
Tosun is a target man and is usually good at winning the ball back and being good with his head but quite the opposite was shown on Wednesday night.
The Everton forward only won 25% of his total duels while winning just 17% of his aerial duels against the Hungary defence which again, just isn’t good enough.
He also failed to carry the ball at all as he registered a 0% success rate with his attempted dribbles.
The 29-year-old will need to put some seriously hard work into his training at Finch farm if he is to prove to Ancelotti that he is worth a first team place becuase based on his recent international showing, he is nowhere near displacing Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
