Report: Marcel Brands likely to sign new Everton contract despite Man Utd speculation
Marcel Brands is likely to sign a new contract with Everton with the director of football’s existing deal due to expire at the end of the season, according to The Athletic.
Last month, The Sun claimed Manchester United have lined up the Dutchman as their first-ever director of football while Roma are also interested.
However, an update by The Athletic reports that Man United’s head of global scouting Marcel Bout is viewed as similar to Brands and if Red Devils would ideally like to appoint a “celebrated former player”.
Everton could reportedly hold talks over a new contract with Brands in the New Year, which is said to be normal among “senior non-playing contracts at Everton”.
Brands has overseen plenty of arrivals and departures during his spell as Everton’s transfer chief.
The 58-year-old, who had spells at Feyenoord and NAC Breda in his playing days, replaced Steve Walsh at Goodison Park in May 2018 after a stint as PSV’s director of football.
Since then, Brands has seen Marco Silva sacked and replaced by Carlo Ancelotti as well as the signings of top players like Lucas Digne, Richarlison, Andre Gomes, Allan, James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Of course, Brands has had his flops too with the jury still out on players like Yerry Mina, Moise Kean and Alex Iwobi. But the very best clubs in the world still make signings like that.
Brands can be forgiven for the bad additions because ultimately, he played a role in appointing Champions League-winning manager Ancelotti while also adding a series of top players to the squad.
Everton are in a far better state now than they were before Brands’ arrival and that is why we’d be glad to see the Dutchman get a new deal at Goodison.
In other Everton news, Doucoure believes Real Madrid made a mistake when they sold Rodriguez.
