'It's a tough one' - Exclusive: Campbell delivers verdict on Everton full-back situation

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell believes that Alex Iwobi and Tom Davies ‘did ok’ as they were deployed as wing-backs as Everton lost 1-0 to Leeds United last weekend.

Iwobi started as a wing-back in the recent win over Fulham and after Lucas Digne picked up an injury, Davies came into the side in an unfamiliar role.

Campbell doesn’t believe that the Everton duo performed badly and claimed that there is a chance the Toffees could sign a new defender in January.

Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said, “I thought they did ok. It’s a different game when you’re at home, the onus is on you to attack. I thought they did ok. They didn’t have outstanding games. But I can’t say that they played poorly. Iwobi did ok.

“I think Carlo Ancelotti might have to shuffle his pack a little bit. I’m not sure if he’s got the trust in younger players to let them come in and play there.

“They could go out and get somebody but when everybody is fit, the player that they’ve bought is out the team so it’s a tough one for Ancelotti.”

Davies won 50% of his defensive duels against Leeds, according to Wyscout, as the 22-year-old put in a solid performance in this new role.

Iwobi only won 33% of his defensive duels as he struggled in a position that he thrived in on his previous outing.

Against Fulham, Iwobi was free to move forward without having to worry about doing too much defending but against Leeds he faced a different challenge.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side is relentless in their attacking and Iwobi struggled to deal with the Leeds attackers while in this unfamiliar position.

Ancelotti has a new problem to fix with Digne set to miss the next few months with his injury.

Everton fans will be hoping that their manager can find a quick fix to this problem before their side take on Burnley next weekend.

In other Everton news, Marcel Brands is likely to sign a new deal, according to a new report.
