Report delivers major Everton injury update on return of Lucas Digne

Carlo Ancelotti believes that Everton defender Lucas Digne could return from injury sooner than initially thought, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Digne was set to spend two months on the sidelines after damaging the ligaments in one of his ankles before the Toffees’ game against Leeds.

But, according to the Liverpool Echo, Digne could return sooner than expected after the defender went under the knife.

They report that Digne had surgery at the beginning of last week with Ancelotti believing the 27-year-old could recover sooner than initially thought.

This will come as a huge boost to Toffees fans, with the French defender having played a massive part in the early success this season.

Everton are yet to win without Digne in the side this term so his return will be welcomed by everyone associated with the club as, in the meantime, Ancelotti tries to turn his side’s season around.

Ancelotti’s job is by no means under threat but he faces the prospect of his side’s season unravelling completely if they don’t put a solid run of wins together in the near future.

There is no doubting the quality Everton have in their ranks, they have the Premier League’s second top scorer and a former Galactico at their disposal.

It is the defence where the main issues are lying for Ancelotti and his initial effort to fix this problem relied on Digne being fit and available for selection as a wing-back in a five-man defence.

Everton don’t have another natural left-back in the first team, apart from Niels Nkounkou who is not being picked in Ancelotti’s matchday squads for reasons unknown.

With the Toffees still hoping to challenge for a top-four spot this season Digne’s return from injury can’t come fast enough and many Toffees fans will be pleased with this new development.

In other Everton news, Kevin Campbell is sceptical of rumours linking Samuel Umtiti with a move to Goodison Park.
