‘Why not?’ – Exclusive: Campbell delivers verdict on Khedira’s Everton comments
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell believes that Sami Khedira would be a quality addition for Everton after the Juventus midfielder explained that he had been in contact with the club.
Speaking to German outlet Bild, Khedira, 33, detailed that he had been in contact with Everton and Tottenham ahead of the January transfer window.
The former Toffees captain highlighted that the midfielder may be a cheap addition to Carlo Ancelotti’s side and hailed the World Cup winner’s experience.
Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said, “Of course, somebody like that who is a quality player, why not? He’s not played a lot of football where he needs to.
“That experience in the middle of the park could prove to be vital and he’s one of these guys who could be picked up for next to nothing.
“So if you’re not willing to shell out on the transfer fee it’s just the wages and he could be a real quality addition.”
Khedira is yet to play for Juventus this season as it seems that his time in Turin is coming to an end.
The 33-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season which means the Toffees could pick Khedira up for a nominal fee in January, as Campbell suggested.
There is also no doubting the experience that the cultured midfielder could bring to Goodison Park.
While Khedira probably wouldn’t start ahead of Abdoulaye Doucoure or Allan, he could slot into a three-man midfield in place of Tom Davies or Gylfi Sigurdsson.
At the very least he would provide a better standard of back up after Davies failed to impress again against Arsenal on Saturday night.
Khedira’s wages could be the only issue but as the Toffees could secure his services for a small fee this may not prevent a deal from being agreed.
Plenty of clubs will be chasing the German’s signature and Everton will be pulling off a real coup if they can lure Khedira to Merseyside.
In other Everton news, Leon Osman believes that Ancelotti deserves plenty of credit after the Toffees’ recent run of form.
