‘If you want to grow…’ – Exclusive: Campbell not concerned by Everton financial losses
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell believes that the losses reported by Everton in their recent accounts are necessary as the club looks to grow.
The Toffees reported losses of around £140 million, as the club spent heavily in the summer and were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Campbell claims that the losses experienced recently will be made up for in the future as the club looks to strengthen on and off the pitch.
Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said, “If you’re looking to strengthen and you’re looking to bring quality players in you have to take some losses.
“They aren’t quite there where the revenue off the field is really growing. Obviously, they’ve gained a great superstar in James Rodriguez so that Colombia and South America corridor is open.
“It’s just a matter of how the club really monetise that. For now, they have to take a big loss but this is what the club has to do right now. If you want to grow you have to take your losses.”
Clubs all over the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the past year due to the loss of matchday revenue with fans locked out of games for the majority of 2020.
This should improve slightly for the Toffees as they are one of few clubs who are allowed to welcome back a limited number of fans under the UK’s new tier system.
Everton are a club on the up and Farhad Moshiri is looking to establish the Toffees as a force in English football once again.
The only way to do that these days is to spend money and that is exactly what he has done.
A Champions League place could be on the cards for Everton this season following their fine start to their Premier League campaign and this would go a long way in recouping some of the losses experienced in the last year.
In football, you have to spend money to make money and this is certainly the case at Goodison Park at the moment.
