Gary Lineker claims Edinson Cavani would have seen red v Everton with VAR
Everton crashed out of the Carabao Cup against Manchester United at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening, losing 2-0.
Carlo Ancelotti made minimal changes in Merseyside, bringing in the likes of Robin Olsen inbetween the sticks.
Manchester United dominated the early stages, but the Toffees appeared to get to grip with their tactics the more the game went on.
The game was few of contentious incidents, but one definitely came in the second half.
Yerry Mina got close to Edinson Cavani in the middle of the park before the Red Devils striker appeared to grab the defender by the neck and throw him to the floor.
Gary Lineker has taken to his personal Twitter account to discuss the incident claiming it was a clear red card for the Uruguayan.
“Cavani would have seen red with VAR,” he wrote.
Lineker is spot on.
Cavani clearly raised his hands to Mina, who was just staying tight with his man, and threw him to the floor – how the officials didn’t think that was a red card is beyond us.
How VAR isn’t being used in the Carabao Cup is also ludicrous.
The technology is in place at Goodison Park, and the game is between two Premier League sides too, so there are no excuses.
Everton have had their fair share of VAR help this season, but it is there to improve the game, so it should have been in place on Wednesday.
In typical fashion, it was Cavani who scored the late opener and there will be outrage in the post-match reactions after that one.
