Exclusive: Campbell hails ‘marvellous’ Godfrey’s Everton form

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has hailed Ben Godfrey’s Everton form as he has become Lucas Digne’s replacement with the Frenchman ruled out through injury.

Digne has missed over a month of action since injuring his ligaments in November but Godfrey has filled in excellently in the 27-year-old’s absence.

Campbell has been very impressed with Godfrey’s showings in recent weeks as he branded the summer signing’s form as ‘marvellous’.

Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said, “He [Digne] is one of the best left-backs in the world. You know what though, Godfrey has been marvellous.

“He has done brilliantly. He hasn’t got a left foot or anything but he’s a strong, determined, quick defender who likes to defend.

“It’s [playing Godfrey] proved to be a good decision as well. When you’re winning games and keeping Chelsea, Sheffield United and Leicester to nil, that tells you everything.”

The former Norwich man has proved to be versatile as he has been deployed at centre half and on both sides of Carlo Ancelotti’s defence this season.

The defender is a natural centre back but his versatility has proved to be vital for the Toffees as the club struggles through a defensive injury crisis.

When Digne returns, there is no doubt that he will be reinstalled as Ancelotti’s first-choice left-back.

This could allow Godfrey to play in his favoured centre back position alongside the equally impressive Michael Keane.

This could make the Toffees a much stronger defensive unit as they continue their hunt for a top-four finish.

Godfrey is looking like a brilliant signing and at only 22-years-old, there is a lot of room for the defender to get even better.
