‘Incredible signing’ – Campbell hails Coleman’s Everton service and talks potential replacements

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has hailed Seamus Coleman as one of the best ever Everton signings as he looks ahead to who may replace him.

Coleman moved to Goodison Park in 2009 from Sligo Rovers and he has been ever-present in the side during the past 12 years.

However, at 32, Coleman isn’t getting any younger and Campbell has explained what the Toffees need to do to replace him.

Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said “Coleman’s been a stalwart.

“Probably one of Everton’s best-ever signings, I think he cost 60 grand. He was an incredible signing.

“Week in week out he’s been unbelievable. His performance levels are unmatched. Any replacement has to be a consistent right back.”

Coleman has always struggled with injuries and this season is no different with the Republic of Ireland defender missing seven Premier League games with knocks this term.

The 32-year-old was predictably a casualty of the congested season that every club is facing this year and it was always unlikely that an older and injury-prone player would make it through the season without a scratch.

Coleman is an Everton icon and the club have a tough job replacing him.

Recently the Blues have been linked with moves for Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey by The Athletic and Norwich’s Max Aarons by TEAMtalk.

If these reports are to be believed then the club are clearly targeting young right-backs with bags of potential.

This shows that Marcel Brands and Co are aware of the concern around replacing Coleman and they have highlighted some of the best young defenders in the country as potential replacements.

It will be interesting to see if we do make a move for a Coleman replacement in the summer.

Whoever that player ends up being will have huge boots to fill.
