Report claims Everton plotting late move for Christian Eriksen
Everton retain a late January interest in Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen, according to a report from Italian outlet Tuttomercato.
The former Tottenham player has been linked with an exit throughout January.
It is believed that the Toffees are monitoring the player’s situation and could make a move in the final few days of the window.
Tuttomercato claim any possible deal relies on departures from Merseyside, as well as Inter deciding to let him go.
The Denmark international was involved in the matchday squad on Tuesday, scoring a last-gasp winner against AC Milan.
A good move… but unlikely
When we first heard of the interest in Eriksen our first thought was of James Rodriguez, and how the ex-Spurs man would fit alongside the Colombian.
The two take up similar positions on the pitch and carry out the same creative functions, but that is not a good enough reason to oppose this signing.
Eriksen has struggled for game time this season, starting just four league games, so he has a point to prove.
That added motivation could allow him to excel at Goodison, and prove why Garth Crooks once labelled him “a diamond in the rough”.
Carlo Ancelotti would have to find a suitable role for the 28-year-old, but he thrived alongside Delle Alli, and we could replicate that.
After all, our manager has expressed a reliance on Rodriguez in the past, indicating we have to play a simpler game when the 29-year-old is not involved.
Having Eriksen in the squad would prevent that.
And given Rodriguez has missed eight games this term, we need another creative force in the side.
A loan move reduces the risk of being lumbered with Eriksen’s hefty wages too, and avoids shelling out a fee equal or more than the £17million Inter spent last January.
Do we think it’s likely to happen? No.
