‘What does Ancelotti see in him?’ – These Everton fans unhappy with Sigurdsson v Newcastle

Everton endured another difficult home game on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle, and Gylfi Sigurdsson came under heavy criticism from fans.

The Toffees have now lost four home games this season, with the loss to Newcastle perhaps the worst of the lot.

There were negatives all over, too.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was not given the service he needs, while Jordan Pickford could arguably have done better to prevent Callum Wilson’s first goal.

The goalkeeper had time to judge the flight of the ball but failed to get across his goalline in time to prevent the header going in.

Everton only had three shots on target against a side that had not won in 11 games, and that means the defence is not to blame.

Instead, James Rodriguez, Richarlison and Sigurdsson have questions to answer.

Supporters are certainly fed up with the latter, who has underperformed consistently in an Everton shirt.

This season the Iceland international has made just 0.4 dribbles per game and in an area where he is supposed to excel – key passes – he has a return of 1.3 per match (WhoScored).

His flaws were highlighted on Saturday, as he failed to create a chance and received a WhoScored rating of 6.4.

That simply is not good enough if we are serious about qualifying for Europe.

Many supporters questioned why the 31-year-old was not taken off given his lack of influence on the match, particularly as we had Anthony Gordon on the bench.

Here is some of the reaction from Everton fans to Sigurdsson’s display.
