‘Future captain’ – Some Everton fans rave about Godfrey display v Liverpool

Everton produced a memorable 2-0 win at Anfield on Saturday and fans have been swooning over the performance of Ben Godfrey.

The centre-back was immense alongside Michael Keane and Mason Holgate, with each ensuring Liverpool’s front-three were stifled.

We were brilliantly organised and conceded barely any chances – Carlo Ancelotti deserves credit for that.

He was still reliant on individual excellence, and Godfrey stepped up in just his second Merseyside derby appearance.

One moment stood out for supporters above all, a superb block Godfrey made to prevent Xherdan’s Shaqiri’s shot on goal.

The 23-year-old showed a brilliant combination of pace and desire to ensure his side kept the score 1-0 at that moment.

Godfrey has proved a brilliant addition since arriving last summer.

His ability to play across the back four deserves more praise, and he really looked at home in the heart of defence on Saturday.

The more he learns from Keane and Ancelotti the better he will get, too, as he still has years ahead of him to develop.

Now it will be interesting to see if Ancelotti continues with the same formation, as the three centre-backs were faultless – achieving an average WhoScored rating of 7.1 between them.

Here is what Toffees think of Godfrey’s performance, with some tipping him to become Everton captain one day.
