‘I am happy’ – James Rodriguez dismisses Everton exit talk
Everton playmaker James Rodriguez has poured cold water on speculation linking him with a summer exit, insisting he is happy at Goodison Park.
Spanish outlet Defensa Central reported last week that the Colombian attacking midfielder, who only joined the Blues last summer, had become disillusioned with life in England.
Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti quickly dismissed such talk however, explaining in his pre-match press conference (via The Liverpool Echo) ahead of facing Liverpool that the former World Cup Golden Boot winner was happy and content on Merseyside.
Now James has himself reiterated his happiness as an Everton player, talking to Marca Claro after the Toffees’ historic win over Liverpool at Anfield. He said:
“I am happy. We all know it is a new stage for me. Almost 30 years old, I am fine. I am happy for every new thing that is added to my life. It all adds up.
“It was tough. Everyone knows that Liverpool is a great team. I think it’s a team that is in the top three of those who play football well.
“I’m happy to have helped my team win. Since 1999, Everton haven’t won (at Anfield), so we’ve made history. I’m happy I was there. I hope we can continue well.”
Never in doubt
It never seemed likely that Everton would allow James to leave the club so early into his contract, nor did it seem likely that the player would already seek to jump ship.
After being a bit-part player for Real Madrid last season, Everton have offered James a greater freedom to grow into a role made for him to succeed at Goodison Park.
The Blues might struggle to retain their top players if they don’t qualify for Europe this year, but as things stand the club are in a strong position to do just that, so players like James should have no reason to leave.
Though he may eventually seek another challenge away from Merseyside, James’ words should ease some supporters’ fears for the foreseeable future.
Now, Ancelotti needs to start turning the talent he’s got at his disposal into more points on the potch.
A win against Liverpool should be just the springboard that we need.
In other Everton news, Fabrizio Romano believes that Everton could demand up to £60.6million for Moise Kean this summer.
