Exclusive: Campbell hails Liverpool as Everton end 22 year derby wait

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has paid tribute to Liverpool after Everton ended their 22-year wait for an Anfield win with a 2-0 victory on Saturday.

Goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson either side of half time sparked wild celebrations as a two-decade hoodoo came to an end.

Campbell scored the only goal of the game when Everton last won at Anfield in 1999 and he couldn’t envision it would be another 22 years before the next win on enemy territory.

When asked if he thought it would be such a long wait, Campbell told Goodison News, “No. When it happened, you thought there might be a change. You look around our team, we had an experienced side out there on the day.

“We couldn’t envisage that 22 years later we’d still be waiting. It just goes to show how good Liverpool are.

“It shows the frailties of Everton over the years but it shows how good Liverpool have been because that is some record to have 22 years of not being beaten by your rivals on your home pitch.”

This is a fair point from Super Kev.

Liverpool have rarely been the inferior team on Merseyside over the past 20 years and most teams struggle to win at Anfield.

Obviously, 22 years is quite a long time to avoid causing an upset but now that mental barrier has been removed a weight has been lifted from the club.

There is a decent chance that we will finish above our rivals this season as they look to be in free fall.

We will be looking to assert our own period of dominance now to get some real revenge on the side that has dominated for so long.

It really feels like last weekend’s win was the start of something big and we hope it isn’t another 22 years for our next Anfield win.
