‘Proved his worth’ – Exclusive: Campbell lauds Pickford’s performance as Everton win at Anfield

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell claims Jordan Pickford owed Everton fans the performance he produced at Anfield on Saturday as the Blues ended 22 years of derby hurt.

Pickford turned in a man of the match performance as the Toffees finally won at Anfield for the first time in 22 years through goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Campbell insists Pickford made up for his error in 2018 when he kept the ball in play which allowed Divock Origi to snatch a late win for Liverpool.

“Jordan Pickford owed Everton and the Everton faithful that performance.,” Campbell told Goodison News.

“He’s an international goalkeeper and a couple of years ago he cost Everton a point at Anfield just by making the wrong decision.

“We’re not going to hold him over the coals for that but the way he performed on Saturday was solid, he was mistake-free and he proved his worth.”

After making a lot of mistakes in recent weeks, Pickford looked back to his best against Liverpool and he certainly made his mark.

While the Reds attack wasn’t as clinical as you’d expect, the former Sunderland man was still there when it mattered as we clinched a rare clean sheet across Stanley Park.

Hopefully, this can be a turning point of sorts for Pickford as if we are to clinch a top-four spot he will need to be sharp for the rest of the season.

We have suggested at numerous points this season Carlo Ancelotti needs to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer but if Pickford produces more performances like the one he gave on Saturday, his spot is safe.

Then again, one mistake next week and we may change our minds again. Don’t let us down Jordan.
