Exclusive: Campbell brands Everton derby celebration critics ‘heartless’
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell has branded critics of Saturday’s scenes of celebration from Everton as ‘heartless’ following the win at Anfield.
The Blues ended a 22-year hoodoo with a 2-0 win on enemy territory against Liverpool and there were wild scenes of celebration after the final whistle.
There has been some criticism levelled at Everton as a result though Super Kev sees no problem with the scenes.
“22 years of not beating your rivals away from home and you get a win. You’ve got to be heartless if you have a go at the celebration,” Campbell told Goodison News.
“There has been a lot of pressure on the Everton players to get it done over the years. It’s been mounting for 22 years.
“It’s not nice when your opposition are celebrating at your stadium, I’ve been there, I know that. But you can’t have a go at them for celebrating after such a long time.”
If a win that was 22 years in the making isn’t worth celebrating we aren’t sure what is.
We also saw similar celebrations from Manchester City, Burnley and Brighton when they won at Anfield in the last few weeks and they didn’t receive any criticism.
Most of the complaints were from Liverpool fans who had probably never seen us win at Anfield in their lives.
Any win is worth celebrating, especially a win against your bitter rivals. If you add the aspect of not winning away from home in a derby for 22 years, what do people want us to do?
Not celebrate a derby win?
We seem to recall Liverpool players celebrating their wins at Goodison Park and we weren’t complaining.
We are absolutely with Super Kev on this one, let’s carry on celebrating.
In other Everton news, we saw one thing from James Rodriguez against Liverpool that we hadn’t previously seen from him.
