Exclusive: Campbell backs DCL to start for Everton v Southampton
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell is backing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to start against Southampton as Everton look to record another Premier League win.
Calvert-Lewin came on off the bench in last weekend’s Merseyside derby after sitting out the previous game with a knock.
Campbell wants to see DCL come straight back in but insists Carlo Ancelotti won’t start his star man if he isn’t 100% fit.
“Ancelotti manages his players very well.”, Campbell told Goodison news.
“He didn’t stress his injury too much [v Liverpool] by coming on, he had a good run out and got a sweat on.
“It’s just a matter of whether he is alright and Richarlison played brilliantly at Anfield but with DCL, Everton are a better team.
“It’s a home game and his home form is sketchy at best but I’d like to think Calvert-Lewin comes in.”
DCL hasn’t scored at home since October’s draw against Liverpool and this is a record he needs to fix sooner rather than later.
He has scored plenty of goals away so it isn’t too much of an issue but against a poor Southampton side, he has a great chance to get back to scoring ways.
We’ll be favourites against the Saints but they have quality players and can punish us if we aren’t careful.
That said, Calvert-Lewin will have a field day if he is properly supplied so the onus is on his teammates to supply him.
In other Everton news, Southampton have been handed a double injury blow ahead of their game against us.
