Report – Tottenham to rival Everton for Lucas Vasquez signature
Tottenham have joined Everton in the race to sign Real Madrid winger Lucas Vasquez this summer, according to The Daily Star.
Deportes Cuatro reported last week that the Blues were one of four clubs that had taken an interest in the Spain international, alongside Leeds United, AC Milan and Napoli.
The 29-year old is out of contract in the summer, with Deportes Cuatro claiming that Vasquez has rejected a new contract offer from Madrid due to him wanting a salary increase.
The Daily Star (Feb 28, p45) now report that Spurs have joined the race to sign Vasquez too, with Jose Mourinho considering a move for the Real Madrid mainstay.
Vasquez has played 27 times for Los Galacticos this season, featuring both as a right-sided winger and full-back.
Strength in depth needed
Everton are currently on the precipice of returning to European football next season, with the Champions League still very much on the cards, no matter how unrealistic that might seem.
As such we need to have greater squad depth next season, with Carlo Ancelotti sure to strengthen considerably when the transfer market becomes available to us again.
While Lucas Vasquez might be a talented player, he might not be the type of player that Ancelotti should be considering.
Vasquez turns 30 in July, and with Everton already having a number of first-team players such as James Rodriguez, Allan, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Fabian Delph and Seamus Coleman on the older side, we could do with seeking out more youthful options.
It’s all about balance and whether we can fight the right blend between youth and experience, and though Vasquez might have the requisite quality, he could represent the wrong type of player.
Mourinho’s Spurs could end up tempting Vasquez more than Everton could anyway, but should the Spaniard prefer a move to Goodison Park, we still think the club could do better.
In other Everton news, AC Milan are ready to challenge Everton for the signature of Norwich defender Max Aarons.
