Ancelotti backs impressive Ben Godfrey for England call-up
Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has backed Ben Godfrey to receive an England call-up following the defender’s outstanding start to life on Merseyside.
The former Norwich City utility man, who made the switch to Goodison Park for around £20million last summer, has taken to football under Ancelotti like a duck takes to water.
The 23-year old has played 18 times for the Blues this season, having been used in every position across the backline by Everton’s Italian coach.
Speaking to the media ahead of Everton’s game against West Brom on Thursday evening, Ancelotti was asked about whether Godfrey has a chance at receiving an international call-up. The Italian responded (via The Liverpool Echo) by saying: “Who is not impressed with Ben Godfrey?
“He’s doing really well, we are really pleased to have him.
“For sure I think with his performances it’s absolutely normal that the England manager has a look at him.”
He makes a fair point
It’s hard to argue with Ancelotti on that one, because we’ve been extremely impressed with how quickly Godfrey has settled at Goodison Park.
Whether he is playing on the left, the right or through the centre, Godfrey already looks as though he’s been a Blue for a long time.
He wears his heart on his sleeve and his defensive performances have been colossal, and that’s not even mentioning the blistering pace that he has exhibited on more than a few occasions.
Godfrey has all of the attributes to succeed at the highest level: power, pace and defensive nouse, and being just 23-years old he could have a bright future ahead of him.
So long as he is able to maintain a consistent level he should be a full England international in no time.
